Unit 8

 Final Film

Task 1

Analysis

What are the important elements of film?

Colour

Colour is important on film because it can evoke a mood or atmosphere within the world of a film. As a filmmaker, you can use colour theory to evoke a period in time, foreshadow events, heighten characterizations, or set an overall mood.

Some of examples of colour theory. Blue is very good for representing sadness or a deep emotion.  It is good for creating a isolated atmosphere Purple - This is very good for making a character look rich and powerful. This is also very good for making a scene look ethereal and fantasy like Pink - This can be a playful romantic love. This a very feminine colour. It can also be quite dreamlike and mystic. White - This can symbol pure.

Set

Set is very important for film as it creates an environment for the characters and lets the audience know what is going on. If your doing a horror movie and set the scene in a dark misty woods then we as the audience think something wrong is going to happen. Set also helps establish the time and place of the story. Props are also a big deal as it can be a big detail to a story.

Lighting

There are 4 factors to Lighting which are Direction, Quality, Source, Colour. All these things are very important to look at it when your filming and editing scenes and this can change the atmosphere of a scene. Lighting is an important element as it can do things like creating shadows and contrast, and set the mood and atmosphere.

Sound

Sound is important as it adds to the atmosphere of the film. If you can get a song and scene to match up well it can make the scene much more impactful. It can be used to convey emotion, establish mood and help create tension or even suspicion.

Genre

Genre is an important element as it is what category your film is based in. Genre is what sets the tone of the film. Once you know what genre you want film to be, you can go by the stereotypes of that category. For example in a horror film their is going to be scary music and jump scares. Genre is the structure of a film, it helps the audience know what to expect.

Camera shots/types

Camera shots are very important in film making. Getting the right shot can make the films go from a 1 to a 10. It can really bring out the emotions if you get the right shot. Shot types can change the dynamics of the scene. For example a two shot shows the relationship towards two people and if you have the two people together it can show intimacy whereas if you have them further away then it show discomfort and tension between the characters. Camera shots are important because they help tell the story visually and they can also be used to highlight important details or to show different perspectives.

Plot

Plot is an important element as it sets the structure for the story, It sets up the conflict and lets you know who the characters are and create narrative arc that drives the action forward. Plot also helps to convey important themes and ideas.

All of these elements are very important as they all work together to create an engaging story that drawers the audience in. By using different elements such as plot, lighting, camera shots and set design, us film makers can create a good and interesting world that drawers viewers in and keep them invested in the story.

My job role on this film is Co- Producer, Costume Designer, Camera and Lighting Operator.

As Co Producer I will work alongside Alex to make decisions on all aspects of the production, from pre-production to post-production. I will be responsible for some creative decisions which will include things like casting actors and I will also be sorting out locations, managing the budgets and working on the day-to-day operations on set. Overall,  as I am Co-Producer, I will be making sure everything runs smoothly and work well with my team.

As Costume designer it is my job to create the look of the characters through their clothing and appearance. I will work closely with the director to develop the visual style of the film, to make sure the costumers are right for the type of vibe that we are going for. I am responsible for putting together looks and making sure the actors always have their costumes on set. I will also help to make sure that makeup and hair is working well with costumes. This is an important job role as I help bring the characters to life.

As Camera Operator, it is my job to operate the camera and capture the visuals that we want for the film. I will work with the director to help bring their vision to the screen. I will set the camera up, frame the shots and make sure that the camera movements are smooth and consistent.

As a Lighting Operator, I will make sure we have the desired look of the mood for the scene and as I am camera operator, making decisions will be easier as only I will be looking and working the camera. As Lighting Operator I will be responsible for setting up and adjusting the lights. I will also be in charge of the intensity, direction and colour of the light.

Task 2

Research

Ideas

1. Losing herself and then self growth

2. Being a bully to being bullied

3. Escaping toxic family or community

4. Lost a friend and then spirals out

Inciting Incident

Inciting Incident - Is an event that sets the main plot in motion, by creating a problem or conflict that the protagonist must resolve.

I'm not to sure what to write for the incident as I am struggling to come up with the actual plot of the film. I would like to do something like she hits rock bottom and she's about to do something terrible but she doesn't. That might be a bit to dark for a student film so maybe she sees something online which clicks in her head that she needs to change.

My original idea

My original idea was about a girl who was very sad and it didn't really get any better for her. I wanted to make a film were people can watch and feel validated. I wanted the message to be that just because your sad doesn't mean its a bad thing. I had taken inspiration from a music video by Nessa Barret. Here is the music video - https://youtu.be/rbhWDMXrcEU . I really liked the visuals in this music video.

Don't Worry Darling - This film plays a very big part in the inspiration of our short film. It is very similar to the kind of message they tell. In DWD the life they live is controlled and manipulated by the people around them. At the end of the movie she finds out she has had her real life taken away from her and is very upset. The person who had controlled her life thought she would be happier in this new world her created because she didn't have to work and everything was all to perfect but she wasn't. In our film we want to send the message of it's normal and healthy to have all emotions including sadness, anger etc, all the emotions that have sometimes deemed to "bad" or "toxic". You don't have to be perfect.

Free Guy - At the start of the movie they is a voice over as the they tell the story which is what we are doing for ours. Were also doing it as it is a quick way to tell the audience what is happening straight away so we can tell the story better. In this clip you will see how everything is always the same and everyone is just living in a stimulation. Another thing about this film is everyone is very happy or very compliant which is how we want our characters to be.

https://youtu.be/yjfRxMn1jUE

Smile - From this movie we really like the creepy smile they do. We wanted our characters to be constantly smiling as they're always happy but because its so forced and fake it looks creepy which is were the smile from this movie comes in. In the clip she is talking about how bad her life has been recently and the therapist is just sat there smiling the full time which makes the audience feel uneasy. I think that's really cool as if someone was to smile at you, it would make you feel more comfortable but the way they do it in this movie makes you feel the opposite. I also think the movement of the therapist in this scene adds to the creepiness as she moves very stiff which makes her feel less human in a way.

Divergent - I like this for costume design. In this clip I like how you can distinctly see who is with what crowd from the clothing. It also shows the group personality through the colour choices as well.

News Article - https://freerange.org/antidepressants-are-turning-millions-into-zombie-robots/

In this news article it talks about how people who are depressed or have anxiety take anti depressants. It turns them into a zombie with no emotion. In our film you take this drink which makes you happy all the time but it turns you into a zombie as it supresses all the other emotions.

Task 4

Production

Filming Day 1

Blue Room

We filmed scene 12 and first filming day which went pretty good. Filming was from 4.30pm - 6.30pm. Next time I will start setting up earlier as I waited until 4.30pm when the actors were ready which did give us less time to actually film. Alex picked this location as she really liked the blue effect this light in the room gave. I didn't like this location at first but the more we filmed the scenes, it started to grow on me. We didn't manage to get all the scenes done that we wanted to which did set us back.

Filming Day 2

Café Scene

The scene we filmed today was Scene 4+ Scene 3. Filming from 2.30pm - 6pm. We had our whole cast today except Morgan and Callum as they had to leave earlier than planned. We worked around then and carried on filming.

Me and Alex were very stressed this day. We had a lot to film this day and we had scenes that we didn't get done on the first day of filming. We were already behind on scheduling and we didn't have enough time to get behind like that again. We didn't get everything we wanted to get filmed that day. We got the big scene like Scene 4 dialogue which was only a few lines but we didn't get some of Scene 3 that we wanted

Changing from Movie to Trailer

We spoke to Kane and we decided it would best to change the film into a long trailer. We thought this would be best as we could manage that. Me and Alex after the conversation started working on a trailer plan. In this photo you can see the rough idea of what we planning. We were thinking of what dialogue would be best for the trailer and what scenes would interest the audience. We were scheduled to film at 4.30pm today so we started working on getting the trailer plan in process. This was much easier for us to manage as we didn't have to film full scenes anymore it was just the key things. This is when we filmed the Toilet Scene below.

Filming Day 3

Toilet Scene

We filmed Scene 10 today. Filming was from 4.30pm - 6.30pm. Today was a really good shoot. We got everything done that we wanted this day. We filmed in a bathroom so we had to let facilities know and we put a sign up so people would know what was going on. It was just Milly today and Alex is also an actor in this scene so it was just me for camera operator. It was fun as their was mirrors in the bathroom and I had to try and not get the camera in was quite cool. I don't think there is anything that could have gone better as we got everything that we needed doing for the day.

Filming Day 4

Hallway Scene

This wasn't a specific scene we just wanted a few of her walking down the hallway and we tried out different angles like the Dutch angle. Filming was from 4.30pm - 6pm. I did have to leave a bit early this day but Alex was okay with out me. It was just Milly for our actors this day which is always easy as when its just one actor, they don't get as distracted. We didn't run into any trouble with equipment or anything like that this day which is great.

Filming Day 5

Dance Scene

Today we filmed Scene 1 + Scene 2. Filming from 2.30pm - 5pm. Today's filming went really good. I feel like we got a lot done. There was a part in the middle of filming were me and Alex thought we were running out of time but we quickly thought of a plan and got the shots done very fast. We got everything done that we wanted to for the day. To keep track of what scenes we had done I would cross it off on our planning sheet which you will have seen under Filming Day 2.

The only things that could have been better was equipment. We ran into a little hiccup. One of the tripods were broken which meant we had to use the old ones which we didn't know how to set up which cut into our filming time. Somebody also didn't but the batteries on charge and just left them in the camera bags. We should have checked the equipment an hour or 2 before filming so that when we ran into these problems, it didn't cut into our filming time.

Another thing which was time consuming was the actors would take a lot of time during each take to settle down which did get a bit irritating after a while as we were on a rushed scheduling

Filming Day 6

Voice- Overs/ Last Shots

Today we did voice overs and we also did some last shots that we wanted doing of Milly and Alex. We did the shots with Alex first as we didn't have Milly till 4.30pm today and me and Alex have been in since 1pm. The shots we got of Alex were very good especially the shot we got of her coming out of the elevator. We tried some new things like shoe shots with her walking. After we got all the shots we wanted, we went into the black box room and set up our equipment. The voice overs went really well, we did have to stop a few times as musical theatre were rehearsing in the theatre.

Task 5

TRAILER

Evaluation

Filming Process

At the start the filming process was a disaster, we were running behind on schedule every time we were filming and things seemed like they were going downhill very fast. We had to change the script several times to shorten it down which was taken more of our time up which we didn't have. Then we had to change some characters around so they fit the new story. Once we changed to a trailer, everything seemed like it was running s

What Went Well

Communication between Crew

- I think Mine and Alex's communication throughout was very good. We had our own opinions on how things should go but we both came to final decisions that worked for both of us. From the beginning me and Alex both were working together on the project. Before we said we would work with each other, we said what we both wanted in the film and we both wanted nearly the same things. We both wanted to say a message. Alex was the writer in the duo so she would go away and think of a quick storyline and then I would tell her which one I liked more. We then both worked together on making the final project.

End Product

- I am very proud with how our trailer turned out. I think even with after all the cutting down we did, it still all worked together. Alex was the editor in the duo and she was editing at home at first. She started to bring her laptop in so I could see how she was getting along and to see

What I would have changed

Cutting down from the start

- Halfway during filming , we realised that we wouldn't have time to get all the filming done that we wanted to get done. We had a conversation with Kane to see if we could change our film to a trailer. Doing that made everything run so much more smoothly. I think if we made trailers from the start then we could have had more time to plan the bigger scenes that we wanted doing. We could have had the costumes more in detail as well if we had more time.
