Unit 5

Sound Production

Lesson 1: Soundscape

11/01/23

What is Soundscape?

A sound or combination of sounds that forms or arises from an immersive environment

Example - Adding bombs in the distant and gunshots would give a war soundscape.

In this first clip I could hear rain and thunder which tells me the soundscape is a thunderstorm. There was also rain flow. To make this more obvious, I think you could add more volume to thunder and up the intensity of the rain.

In this first clip I could hear sword clashing and men fighting which tells me the soundscape is a medieval war/battle setting. To make this more obvious, I think you could add some horses noise as horse combat was used in the medieval times.

Lesson 2 : Foley

18/1/23

What does the term "Foley" mean?

Foley is the creation of a sound after a scene has already been filmed to ensure that all sounds are crisp and clean.

There are Foley artist who improve the quality of sounds for a film/show. Example is using water on leaves to sound like a thunderstorm.

The Magic of Making Sound

The Secret World of Foley

In this video they are enhancing the sounds. They watch the video on a viewing screen and then find the right timing to re create the sound. The reason Foley artist are so important for a project is so that no sound gets lost underneath conversations or any other noise that is happening. After they have recorded the sound they mix it and when everything is fine they send it to studios. This is good for a studio as it saves time so you don't have to keep filming to get the sound.

Lesson 3

25/1/23

Score - Piece of music that has been very specifically crafted for a film. Film score composers create the music for a film based on the direction given from the director. A score enhances an emotional impact. Score is used to create a tone or feel for a film

Soundtrack -  Music that is chose for a film. These can be songs already made. The purpose of  soundtrack is to enhance the atmosphere and can link into the narrative. A soundtrack can include original songs with lyric written specifically for the programme. It can also set a time period.

Task 1

Coffee Shop Soundscape

This clip is a coffee shop soundscape. There is a few individual sounds in this soundscape. There is a different groups of people having conversations which you can barley make out what they are saying. There is a sound of chairs squeaking when people are getting out of the chairs. There is plates and cups clashing of each other which also sounds like cutlery being put away. I can also hear coffee machines working. I can hear cupboards being opened and closed.

If I wanted to change this soundscape, I could change it to a supermarket soundscape. I would keep the conversations of the customers as you would hear that in a supermarket. Things I would get rid of is the sound of a coffee machine and plates clashing against each other. I would also get rid of chairs squeaking. I would add the sound of wheels which would come from trolleys and also a role container that the staff use to stock up the shelves. I would add the sounds of tills beeping and the cashier pressing the buttons on the tills and also the sound of money being passed through the till to the costumer. Another thing I could add is somebody saying something over the monitor like "clean up on isle 9".

Gym Soundscape

play at 3:20 - 5:20

This clip is a gym soundscape. In this soundscape, I can hear someone running on a treadmill and I can also hear water being poured. Another sound I can hear is weights being lifted. There is times where I can hear a beeping sound

If I wanted to change this soundscape, I could change the soundscape to a busy restaurant kitchen. I would get rid of the running on the treadmill. I would keep the beeping sound as that could be a microwave or a timer. I would keep the ball hitting the floor as it could e a chef bashing some kind of meat on the counter. I would keep the picking up of weights sound as it sounds like plates clashing against each other. I would also keep the water sound as that could sound like pouring a wine for a couple.. I would add small conversations in the distant that would be coming from the customers in the restaurant. I would add staff calling out customers orders to the chefs to show that we are in a restaurant kitchen setting.

Task 2

Planning

Theme Park

This is a theme park soundscape. The individuals sounds are very vivid. I can hear a sinister laughing which I think is coming from a clown which could be a clown game or an actor working in the park. I can hear rides rushing by and the wind that it is creating. I can hear faint screaming which must be from the rides. I can hear a clicking/popping sound which I think is stall game being played. I can also hear children laughing.

How I can create the sounds

rollercoaster  - Go to a theme park and record a rollercoaster. Will be able to capture the wind, screaming and maybe the sound of the roller coaster going up.

clowns laughing - record myself  laughing and edit so the pitch is higher

children laughing - record kids or various ages to get the different laughs.

Fire Soundscape

In this clip I can hear faint wind blowing. I can hear crickets which tells me it is night time. I can hear fire burning which tells me this soundscape is a campfire. I would add quiet talking so you know that there is people around a campfire.

How I can create the sounds

add wind blowing on tent - get some clothing and try different speeds of ruffling them around. If I make the clothes wet it might give off a better sound.

zip - record me zipping and unzipping clothing. Maybe a bag will give a better effect.

foot steps - I can go to various locations to capture different type of sounds. For example I could go to the woods to stand on twigs.

heard someone starting fire - light a matches

the fire boiling - When I've boiled something like pasta before it sounds similar to like the baseline sound of a fire.

steak sizzling - put a lot of oil in a pan and get some water and meat and let it cook the natural sounds will be good.

fire crackling - get a crisp bag, scrunch it up and let it slowly release. It should make a base of a low level crackling sounds.

fire - crunching dry leaves together

crackling wood logs - popping bubble wrap, snapping sticks

I think I'm going to do the camp fire soundscape as I found it very interesting and I liked the little audio story I could create. I also like that I can create the sounds out of different things rather than recording the actual sound itself. For example on the theme park soundscape, when I broke it down the sounds of the roller coaster were all going to be just recordings of actual rollercoasters and there will be no way to produce these sounds in a controlled environment easily. Where as on the Campfire soundscape to make the sound of fire crackling I will be using a bag of crisps.

Fire Foley Soundscape Guide

This video was very helpful as it showed me how he layered the sounds together. It also shows me what products he used and how he used them.

MoodBoards

The mood boards represent the visuals I wanted to portray through this campfire soundscape. I did one for each element that my sounds were based on. Fire, Camp, Children and the Woods. I think all the elements are important to build this soundscape.

Task 3

Production

Here is my final video

Campfire Soundscape

Task 4

Evaluation

My filming went really good. Once I broke down how to make the sounds and what materials to use i could just put everything together easily. It wasn’t that hard to do it was more of the editing which I found hard. One thing I need to improve is the duration of the clip. I was trying to tell more of a story of someone getting out a tent and walking to start a campfire. I think that if this clip was longer it would have made the story make more sense whereas it sounds more rushed.

I asked my classmate Alex to give me a quick review on my soundscape. She said initially she though it was someone digging a garden. She also thought it could of been someone doing a slime asmr video. I asked a second person to review my soundscape. Martin said he could hear someone opening a packet of crisps and someone walking on a muddy footpath. The more he listened to it he could hear people talking. He could hear the individual sounds better. He thought it was someone eating crisps and walking around outside.
